Update: Emily Elott's Summer Internship in Washington, D.C.

Emily with Senator Tammy Duckworth
Sep 12 2017

One highlight for Emily is as follows: "I attend[ed] a full committee hearing on monetary policy. That day, Chairwoman of the Federal Reserve, Janet Yellen, arrived in the Senate to provide her semiannual testimony on the state of the American economy. I admire Chairwoman Yellen for her poise, grace, and intellectual heft. I sat ten feet behind her and listened to her defend her policies and opinions against a barrage of questions from senators who were not always friendly. I even got to ride in the elevator with her afterward! It was particularly exciting to see my knowledge of economics appear in a real-world setting with actual policy implications."

Emily would give the following advice to future summer interns: "Begin cultivating relationships with other people in the office from the very beginning. These relationships will not only yield interesting work but also help you gain insight into your future career."

A rewarding challenge she encountered was "beginning and navigating relationships with staffers." Emily felt that ultimately she "learned how to successfully interact and work with others to achieve[...]mutual goals."
